One doesn’t usually associate beautiful jewelry with the time of the Spanish Inquisition. But in the Smithsonian Institution’s collection of jewelry, there is an exquisite necklace holder stand and a necklace badge holder of diamonds and emeralds.
It is an incredible double row of diamonds and emeralds finishing in a chandelier of emeralds. There is unfortunately very little information about the provenance of this necklace holders. The large diamonds and Columbian emeralds were most likely carved in India in the 17th century. This would make them one of the earliest examples of cut gemstones in the Smithsonian’s Collection. They are really only legends surrounding this necklace and what type of wall necklace holder display stand were used in this era. They indicate that it was worn at times by Spanish and French royalty. In the early 20th century, it was purchased by the Maharajah of Indore, whose son sold the necklace in 1947 to Harry Winston. Winston subsequently sold the necklace to Mrs. Cora Hubbard Williams of Pittsburgh. She bequeathed it to the Smithsonian in 1972.
Emeralds are a type of crystal known as beryls. Beryls are usually clear crystals, but when placed with chromium or vanadium, they keep many shades of green. The purest green are the rarest emeralds and many people actually prefer an emerald that has a blue-green tint.
Before the 16th century, the only known emerald deposits were in Cleopatra’s Egyptian mines. But after emeralds were found in Columbia, those later became the “gold standard” in emeralds. Columbian emeralds have been discovered by archaeologists among artifacts of such tribes as the Inca, Maya, Aztec, Toltec and the almost unknown Chibcha Indians.
When I found out a few years ago there was something called “skinny jeans” and that with girls clothing they were coming into style, I must admit, I didn’t like the idea. 2. Put on a vest or cardigan that is longer than the shirt or tank you are wearing, to go with your skinny jeans. This will have the same effect as a long shirt, but gives you the ability to layer.
3. If you are shorter, make sure your skinny jeans don’t bunch at your ankle too much, as this will make you appear even shorter.
Those are just a few tips you can try out, but they might not work for everyone. The most important thing is that you feel good about how you look.
So now that I’ve overcome my fear of skinnies, I’ve fallen in love with them! Most recently I bought a pair of black skinny corduroys from Urban Outfitters for under $40. I love them in black because they flatter my figure and if I want, I can easily make them look dressy for a nice event, with the right top of course. And don’t forget how awesome these wonderful pants look with boots! The perfect look for a chilly fall day!
